Sea The Stars has scooped the Duralock Racing Award. The Irish thoroughbred was announced as the winner of the prestigious prize at the Animal Health Trust Equestrian Awards.

Runners-up for the award were jockey Tony McCoy and veteran trainer Barry Hills. But Hills didn’t go home empty-handed: he was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his 40-year training career.

Champion jockey Richard Dunwoody received the Special Award for his charity work. In summer 2009 he set himself the challenge of walking 1000 miles in 1000 hours to raise money for various charities, including Racing Welfare.

The annual awards ceremony is hosted by the Animal Health Trust (AHT), a veterinary charity dedicated to improving the health and welfare of horses, dogs and cats.

This year’s event was hosted by the Princess Royal and raised over £70,000 for the charity’s vital work.

Sea The Stars, widely considered the greatest flat racehorse of all time, retired from racing a month before being named winner of the Duralock Racing Award, and has now begun a career at stud.
